The Visitor Experiences Operations Manager provided Trustees with an update on activities that have taken place, and those planned, at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park throughout 2026. Trustees were also invited to consider arranging official celebrations to commemorate the centenary of the Bandstand in September 2026 and the centenary of the National Lido of Wales in 2027. The Chair took the opportunity to thank the officers and recognised that development of the application for Pontypridd to be shortlisted as the UK Town of Culture in 2028 would require a considerable amount of work. The Chair questioned when the results of the competition would become available and officers advised that this would likely be during the Spring of the forthcoming year. The Chair expressed support for holding celebrations to mark the centenary of the Bandstand. It was noted that the Bandstand is a significant and attractive feature of the park and continues to play an important role in its activities and events. Reference was made to Armed Forces Day, during which the Bandstand served as a focal point for the celebrations and was well received by members of the public. The Cabinet Member for Resources, Customer and Energy was supportive of holding official celebrations to mark the centenaries of the Bandstand, the National Lido of Wales, the Evan James and James James memorials. The Leader echoed earlier comments and expressed support for the range of activities proposed to mark the anniversaries, whilst emphasising the need to remain mindful of the associated costs. The Leader highlighted the importance of the park and the National Lido of Wales as key visitor attractions, noting that they attract visitors from across the region and beyond. The Leader referred to the huge success of the Big Bite event, which was held at the park on the previous weekend and it was noted that visitors had attended from far and wide to enjoy the facilities on offer. The Cabinet Member for Environment and Capital Infrastructure questioned whether the proposal to hold an official centenary celebration in September 2026 would be for a one-off event of for a range of activities for the year. The Director for Community Services confirmed that the proposal before the Trustees was for a one-off event but that offficers would be pleased to coordinate a civic event to commemorate the centenary of the Bandstand. It was suggested that this could be aligned with planned public engagement activities relating to the UK Town of Culture bid, providing an opportunity to gather views on the role of the park and aspirations for its future development as part of the formal submission process. The Officer noted that a number of smaller commemorative events had already taken place in recognition of the Bandstand’s centenary, including a craft and song event organised by Calon Taf, the Brass Band Festival arranged by Pontypridd Town Council and local volunteers, and the flower bed within the park. It was felt that such commemorative activity would be a fitting lead to a larger civic celebration in September. The Leader was content to formally move the recommendations contained within the report and in doing so, referred to the Big Bite event held at the park and welcomed the continued use of Ynysangharad War Memorial Park as a community asset. Reference was made to the Rugby Club’s 150th anniversary celebrations, during which the park and the Bandstand had served as focal points for activities and community engagement. The Chair thanked officers and Members for their contributions and the Sub-Committee RESOLVED: 1. To note the activities that have taken place and are planned for Ynysangharad War Memorial Park during 2026; 2. To decide on whether an official celebration to mark the centenary of the Bandstand is to be held in September 2026; 3. To advise on any organisations or partners to involve in any official celebration to mark the centenary of the Bandstand; 4. To decide on whether an official celebration to mark the centenary of the National Lido of Wales is to be held in 2027; 5. To decide on whether an official celebration to mark the centenary of the Evan James and James James memorial be explored to be held during July 2030; and 6. To approve the use of Ynysangharad War Memorial Park as a key host venue for events proposed as part of the programme in the full application for Pontypridd to become the inaugural UK Town of Culture in 2028, and for any activity associated with the development of the full application.
