RESOLVED: i. To note the content of the update report; ii. To approve the proposed construction programme and associated phased restrictions on use of park areas in the lead up to and following the RCT National Eisteddfod being held between the 3rd and 10th August. N.B with the permission of the Chair, County Borough Councillor K Johnson addressed the Committee, in his capacity as the Event Director of the Pontypridd parkrun.
The Head of Leisure, Sports and Parks presented the report to Members and noted that the purpose of the report is to seek Trustee approval of the proposed programme of construction for the Main Event Site (Maes) of the RCT National Eisteddfod within Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. Following the overview, the Chair thanked the Head of Leisure, Sports and Park for providing such a comprehensive report. The Chair subsequently invited Councillor Johnson to speak on the report as a guest to the Committee. Councillor Johnson noted that he was attending today in his capacity as the Event Director of the Pontypridd Park Run and therefore declared a personal interest. Councillor Johnson spoke of the success of the Park Run and noted that there are approximately 450 participants each week. He also noted that it is also a fundraising event to support Cancer research and to support those effected and living with Cancer. He praised engagement with the Eisteddfod and noted that he was assured that the impact on the Park Run would be kept to a minimum. He noted however that he was asked to cancel the events on the 3rd and 10th August when the Eisteddfod is taking place. Subsequent to that he noted that he has received no further engagement with the Eisteddfod and was therefore surprised when he seen the attached report noted that the Park Run would be closed on the 14th July. He notes tha as per the report he has asked people to go elsewhere and has notified people that the Park Run will not take place. However, Councillor Johnson raised concerns that some people cannot go elsewhere due to public transport and work/family commitments and also noted that a longer period of closure leads to volunteer issues and problems with not attracting them back. Councillor Johnson therefore requested that Trustees and Officers take this information into account today when considering the report. The Chair thanked Councillor Johnson for his contribution. The Head of Leisure, Sports and Parks noted that the Event will become a ‘building site’ from the 20th - 27th July, and that it will remain closed during the Event and also the 17th and 24th after the Event. The dates are obviously subject to outside maters such as the weather before the Event and during the Event itself. The RCT Events Officer emphasised that it was agreed to allow Park Run to continue up until the 14th albeit that parts of the park would still be under construction at that point. The Chair noted that the Committee’s Trustees all recognise the valued contribution that Park Run makes to the community, however the Chair also recognised the enormity of putting together the Event in the Park and also the importance of ensuring that public safety is paramount during this time. Another Trustee queried if there was anything that can be done for Park Run participants who can’t travel in the Pontypridd area. The Head of Leisure, Sports and Park noted that he would be happy to arrange some temporary free leisure vouchers for those participants who cant travel in the Pontypridd area, therefore still allowing them to get their exercise done whilst the temporary closure is in place. Trustees praised this suggestion and noted their praise for the Pontypriidd Park Run and to the Officers who organise it and the participants. Councillor Johnson thanked Trustees and Officers and noted that Health and Safety is his paramount concern too. He noted that he will cancel the Park Run Events from the 20th-27th July, the Events during the Eisteddfod and also post the Eisteddfod on the 17th August. Officers reassured him that they will of course keep him updated throughout. All Trustees wished to thank all RCT Staff for their hard work in bringing the Eisteddfod together and noted how proud they were to hold the Eisteddfod in Pontypridd. Following discussion , it was RESOLVED: i.
There was no urgent business to discuss.
