The Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety submitted a report CE/29/23s which allowed the Committee, acting as the Crime & Disorder Scrutiny Committee, to review and scrutinise decisions by the Wrexham Community Safety Partnership (CSP) in connection with the discharge of crime and disorder functions by Responsible Authorities. The Lead Member for Finance and Performance was present at the meeting, taking part in the discussion and responding to questions on behalf of the Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety. Chief Inspector Steven Roberts, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership gave a presentation which provided further detail and statistics relating to the priorities and achievement measures for 2020 – 2023. He responded to questions accordingly thereafter with input from the relevant Officers. During the debate, the following issues were noted, in particular: • Suggestion that police presence in the community had declined recently. Particular reference was made to the Community Council meetings. The Chief Inspector advised that it was no longer achievable to have police presence at every Community Council meeting. The Lead Member for Finance and Performance stated that there was a need to make best use of police resources for the whole of the County Borough. • A request was made for the re-circulation of community based information reports. The Chief Inspector agreed to look into this request. • Reference was made to the recent drugs raid in Cefn and this major breakthrough by North Wales Police was congratulated by Members of the Committee. It was noted that multi-agency conversations were continuing in order to minimise the risk of a recurrence of related issues, particularly around housing. • The positive work carried out by PCSO’s was referenced and the uncertainty around future funding was discussed. • The need for further work to continue between NWP and the Housing Department around the growing increase in Cuckooing. It was noted that prevention was the priority in tackling this issue. • Reference to the recent successful operation led by NWP in respect of domestic violence and recognition that this remained a priority area. Statistics in relation to this crime had improved. • Concern that the 101 system was not working efficiently. The Chief Inspector confirmed that on line reporting was a more efficient way of reporting incidents. AGREED – The Committee thank the Chief Inspector, the Lead Member and officers for the report and commend them for the progress achieved and look forward to further improvements in next year’s report. The agreement for further work between the police and housing in relation to cuckooing be noted.
AGREED - That the press and public be excluded from the Meeting during consideration of the following item as it was likely that, if they were present, there would be disclosure to them of exempt information as defined in Paragraphs 14 and 15 of Part 4 of Schedule 12A to the Local Government Act 1972 (as amended).
