Y penderfyniad fel y'i cofnodwyd
RESOLVED – That the verbal update be received and noted.
The Trading Standards and Licensing Lead Officer provided a verbal update on current Trading Standards priorities and their potential impact on licensed premises. Members were advised that Trading Standards worked closely with partner organisations, including North Wales Police, HM Revenue and Customs, licensing authorities and other enforcement agencies to tackle criminal activity affecting local communities. Officers highlighted the increasing involvement of organised criminal networks in the sale of illicit tobacco, illegal alcohol and counterfeit products and emphasised the importance of intelligence-led enforcement and partnership working. The Committee was informed that current challenges included the growth of online sales, low-cost alcohol, illicit tobacco and counterfeit goods. Officers advised that organised criminal activity operated on a regional and national scale and that Trading Standards continued to work with enforcement partners to disrupt these activities and protect consumers. The following matters were discussed: • Staffing resources and the support available through external funding. • Welsh Government funding for an apprentice role as part of a wider all-Wales project to strengthen tobacco and alcohol enforcement activity. Members were advised that the funding was ring-fenced for training, disruption work and increasing service capacity. • Workforce development, including the successful qualification of two officers and the mentoring and training arrangements in place for apprentices. • The nature and scale of organised criminal activity, with officers advising that intelligence indicated illicit tobacco networks operated across the UK. • The importance of intelligence-led working, including information received from partner agencies, local communities and Crimestoppers. • Public awareness and educational initiatives, including work with schools and communication campaigns aimed at highlighting the dangers of counterfeit products, vaping and substance misuse. · Concerns regarding the harmful nature of counterfeit and illegal products and their impact on vulnerable communities. • The breadth of Trading Standards responsibilities and the challenges of managing enforcement activity across licensed premises, online trading and consumer protection matters within available resources. Members thanked the officers for the informative presentation and commended the Trading Standards team for their ongoing work in protecting local communities. RESOLVED – That the verbal update be received and noted.
