Cabinet Members and relevant officers updated the Panel on the Council’s approach to weed spraying and wildflower planting. It focused on the use of glyphosate-based herbicides, their effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and environmental impact, confirming that current practices follow HSE guidance. The discussion also highlighted the Council’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity through wildflower planting, including both native and non-native species, and the role of the “cut and collect” programme in supporting nature recovery. Key concerns raised by Panel Members included: • The potential health risks of glyphosate to humans and animals, referencing recent international studies. • The environmental impact on pollinators, soil health, and biodiversity, particularly in areas treated prior to wildflower planting. • The desire to reduce glyphosate use and explore non-chemical alternatives, including manual methods and steam treatments. • The feasibility of excluding sensitive areas such as schools and parks from spraying. • The long-term sustainability of glyphosate use, including the risk of resistance in invasive species like Japanese knotweed. • The balance between native and non-native wildflower planting and its impact on biodiversity and public expectations. • The need for improved public communication about nature recovery initiatives and available community grants.
Panel considered the work plan and noted items for the next meeting.
Rhaid i gynghorwyr ddweud pan fydd ganddyn nhw gysylltiad personol â rhywbeth sy'n cael ei drafod, fel swydd, eiddo neu aelod o'r teulu. Mae buddiant sy'n rhagfarnu yn ddigon cryf i'r cynghorydd adael yr ystafell fel arfer a pheidio â chymryd rhan.
Caiff datganiadau eu darllen o'r cofnodion unwaith y byddan nhw wedi'u cyhoeddi.
Yn rhestru cynghorwyr presennol y cyngor yn unig. Nid yw aelodau cyfetholedig, swyddogion a chyn-gynghorwyr yn cael eu dangos.
