Paul Meller, Natural Environment Manager presented a report which sought to endorse the Council Notice of Motion which called for a report to Cabinet outlining the options for delivery and maintenance of a commemorative woodland to mark the 100-year anniversary of the cenotaph and the sacrifice that the people from all communities serving in our armed forces had made in service of our country. It was outlined that the motion stemmed from a proposal that originally sought to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Swansea Cenotaph. The intention was to provide a living tribute to commemorate all those from Swansea who gave their lives in service. The motion referred to cenotaphs and there were numerous war memorials around Swansea. The majority of these stemmed from the period following the First World War and the method of commemoration varies from stone crosses, gateways, statues, plaques and plinths. There were also memorial halls, chapels, screens, books of remembrance and stained-glass windows. The report outlined the background to the proposals, land availability, planting strategy, details of tree species and type, details of commemoration and QR code integration, tree maintenance, viability, details of stakeholder participation and the proposed way forward. The Committee discussed the options provided in the report, particularly the tree planting strategy, the available Council owned land and community engagement. Resolved that the notice of motion be reported to Cabinet with a recommendation of support on the basis of the proposed way forward outlined in the report.
The Chair referred to the updated Committee Work Plan 2025/26. She added that following discussions with Cabinet Members the Work Plan would focus upon four themes: transport; green infrastructure; adaptation & mitigation; and waste.
