Response by the Cabinet Member: Our officers in Strategic Property Team have contacted the Solar for Schools team and received the following feedback around the scheme. The funding provided is either through grant funding, or power purchase agreement – where the capital for the projects is funded through the solar for schools’ community benefit society and the school pays for the solar energy, they consume at a rate lower than the mains electricity rate. So, it is not a loan. This is just an agreement to use the solar energy from the panels installed on the school roof. The asset is the responsibility of the society, so the school doesn’t have any responsibility if it breaks etc. For the grant funding specifically in the area through the national grid – this is an exclusive grant only through solar for schools. It is a £2.7million commitment from the National Grid to put towards solar projects in their region. The criteria for this, is the school must have a higher free school meal percentage than 25%. The Solar for School manages the applications for any schools interested, but as you can imagine we have had a lot of interest so expect the monies to be used up relatively quickly. The Solar for Schools team would of course be happy to support as many of your schools as possible. Please see below list of those schools where over 25% of learners are in receipt of e-Free School Meals.
