Councillor Evans asked: The Mercure Hotel and Chartist Tower are very important assets to the city centre, in my opinion. Do you agree? What have you done , and what will you do personally to secure their long-term future and viability? Councillor Batrouni responded: The Mercure has been a huge success, winning accolades and awards – and in October last year, an article by one of the hotel’s senior managers highlighted that more than 90,000 people from 12 countries had been guests in the last two years. To enable the development of the hotel, the council approved a package of support to the developer and continued to support the redevelopment of Chartist Tower despite delays due to the pandemic. We will continue to promote the facilities available at the hotel and support new businesses in the commercial units. We also continue to invest in regeneration and events in the city centre in order to bring in more visitors and footfall to support all of our businesses. The recent Food Festival is a great example which saw pedestrian footfall in the city centre exceed 135,000.
