Councillor Fouweather asked: It’s great news that the Transporter Bridge will continue to carry cars across the river for future years. Do the Gondola cables need replacing? When will we find out? With a project already ‘over budget’ - at around £17 million - how much would it cost to replace the Gondola cables? Has this cost already been factored in to the overall estimated £17 million project cost or will the cost rise even higher above £17 million? How long will it take to replace the Gondola cables? Are we looking at yet another delay to a project that is already 2.5 years behind schedule? Councillor Stowell-Corten responded: The Transporter Bridge is a complex structure and there are various components which enable the gondola to operate. The Bridge was surveyed as part of the project development phase and the required repairs were includes within the awarded contracts. With any structure which is nearly 120 years old and exposed to the elements, the extent of restoration works, or replacement are not confirmed until work commences on that section. Naturally, we have found some sections in significantly worse condition than expected, and some sections better than expected. At the time of original survey, the haulage cables did not require replacement. Further testing and servicing of all electrical equipment will take place in the coming months. You will recall that additional funding was secured from UK Government for “an enhanced level of restoration to the bridge… and repairs and upgrades to the bridge’s electrical systems, and restoration work on the gondola.” A press release was issued, and I have included the following link for your convenience.
