RESOLVED: that the Ysgol Esgob Morgan presentation on War and Conflict be received.
Pupils from Ysgol Esgob Morgan gave a presentation to members demonstrating the work they had completed on War and Conflict around the world during the past term. For the past term, year 5 and 6 pupils had been immersed in a deep study of War and Conflict. They explored the human side of history, how identity, leadership, and propaganda change the world we live in today. During the project, they also explored the legacy of Janusz Korczak and how his sacrifice shaped our modern Children’s Rights. By connecting with museums and experts across Britain and Poland, they brought the story of Janusz Korczak to life. It was a powerful reminder that these were not just names in a book, they were heroes whose lessons on human rights were still protecting us today. Members were shown photographs of all the work the pupils had completed including work on Authority and Influence, Value and Ethics and Fake News. Members praised and thanked the pupils from Ysgol Esgob Morgan for presenting their work to them and for attending the meeting. Members asked whether the pupils had received responses from any of the museums or experts they had contacted. The pupils confirmed that they had received replies to their letters, which had provided valuable information to support their work. The RVE Adviser asked the pupils what advice they would give for distinguishing between fake news and reliable news sources. The pupils explained that fake news found online can sometimes contain errors in punctuation, spelling, or email addresses, and that checking these details can help identify unreliable information. RESOLVED: that the Ysgol Esgob Morgan presentation on War and Conflict be received.

RESOLVED: that the update on the Religious Studies GSCE be received.
The RVE Adviser explained that there were concerns around the mandatory aspect of Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE) in years 10 and 11 with falling GSCE entries and changes to GSCE specifications. Heads of Department in all schools had been contacted to gather their views and concerns. It was highlighted that perceptions of the Religious Education (RE) GCSE were a key factor contributing to the decline in pupil uptake. The WJEC and Qualifications Wales were in discussions with teachers to assess the current situation. Concerns were raised that the GCSE specification contained too much academic content, making it difficult to cover all topics thoroughly within the available teaching time and do justice to the subject. It was noted that enrolment numbers for both the full and short course GCSEs had declined over recent years. Members were informed that the short course GCSE would no longer be available from next year. SACRE had a responsibility to support schools in providing mandatory Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE) education for all learners. However, schools were often reluctant to allocate curriculum time and resources to subjects that did not lead to a formal qualification. The Head Teacher of St Brigid’s School reported that the Religious Education (RE) GCSE had become increasingly unpopular and that, for the first time, the school had been unable to offer RE at A-Level due to low uptake. Concern was expressed regarding the future of RE provision for pupils aged 14 and over, and it was suggested that making the RE GCSE a compulsory subject for all pupils should be reconsidered. The RVE Adviser requested that the Headteacher of St Brigid’s School document her concerns and forward them to him so that they could be submitted to Qualifications Wales for consideration. RESOLVED: that the update on the Religious Studies GSCE be received.

RESOLVED: that the Denbighshire Summer 2026 Newsletter be received
The RVE Adviser presented the most recent edition of the Denbighshire and Conwy Summer 2026 newsletter, REach (previously circulated) which supported the work of Denbighshire and Conwy’s SAC(RE)s. Articles in the newsletter related to the following – · Translating the untranslatable (The 1588 Welsh Bible) – Jennie Downes postgraduate research student under the supervision of Dr Gareth Evans-Jones (Bangor University), shared insights from her recent research on RVE pedagogy. She demonstrated how learners can be supported in exploring the spiritual aspects of their learning in Religion, Values, and Ethics. The research examined how studying the narrative of the 1588 Welsh Bible translation can deepen understanding of the Bible's significance, through the concept of Cynefin, and how this can be integrated into the Curriculum for Wales. · Discovering Muslims for Progression Steps 3-4 RVE (Mark Bryant) – The Islam-UK Centre at Cardiff University had developed a range of RVE teaching resources, primarily aimed at PS3-4 but adaptable for other progression steps. These resources reflected the Centre’s research focus on lived experiences, aligning with the phenomenological approach to religion and worldviews found such as that found in the Curriculum for Wales. It was agreed that the Newsletter continued to provide a good opportunity to promote SAC(RE)’s work with schools by sharing them with schools on a regular basis. The Newsletter was translated into Welsh, with the quality of the translation of the Newsletter praised by members. The Chair thanked the RVE Adviser for his work in producing the newsletter. RESOLVED: that the Denbighshire Summer 2026 Newsletter be received
