The Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Facilities – Infrastructure presented the recommendation from the Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee held on 20 March 2024 in relation Minute 853 (Councillor Call For Action - Lack of gritting - Great Orme, Llandudno), which requested further consideration be given to prioritising Ty Gwyn Road, Llandudno for gritting and that a broader review be undertaken to re-assess gritting routes and access in order to combat isolation in rural parts of the County be supported. The Local Ward Members (Councillors Mandy Hawkins, Louise Emery and Harry Saville) were given the opportunity to address the Cabinet in support of the recommendation and made the following observations:- · There were 1,490 residents living on the Great Orme, with 625 over the age of 65. · The area had businesses, was on a regular bus route and had a Pupil Referral Unit. · Risk to residents in the case of emergency services not being able to access properties. · The request was only for Ty Gwyn road to be gritted as part of a primary route. Members were advised that there were currently 10 primary routes and to include another, especially on the Great Orme, would incur an additional cost of between £100k - £200k, as it would involve the purchase of a suitable vehicle to access the route and the employment of additional staff. This cost would escalate further if additional primary routes were included as part of any review of the primary gritting routes. Further to the above, the Local Ward Members were assured that the current gritting regime of a tractor gritting the route during severe conditions would continue. After considering the above and the costs that including an additional primary route would incur, the Cabinet advised that they would not be able to support the recommendation. RESOLVED- That the current arrangements of 10 primary gritting routes continue, with a periodical review of the routes. (Note: Councillor Julie Fallon declared a personal interest in the above item, as close family members live on the Great Orme.
