The Cabinet Member for Education introduced a report on the Local Government Estyn Inspection of Education Services in Conwy Local Authority and the Head of Education Services highlighted key points from within the report. In scrutinising the report, Members discussed the following: • Congratulations were extended to the Head of Education Services, the Strategic Director for Social Care and Education, the Cabinet Member for Education and all Education staff for achieving an excellent Estyn report during challenging times. • A marketing forum would work on promoting use of the Welsh language for parents and School Governors. • It was suggested that the excellent feedback received from Estyn be publicised. • Work was ongoing in respect of attendance levels following the pandemic. All schools had access to attendance data and shared good practice. It was also advised that: - Due to resource issues it was not possible to individually support all families who required support with attendance. - Work was taking place though Family Centres in order to help families engage with education. - Pupil Referral Units provided a pathway to education for those pupils who were difficult to reach and engage with. • Monitoring the educational progress of children looked after was a challenge and that a business case for a ‘virtual head’ had not been supported. • The Corporate Parenting Annual Report would be presented to the Social Care and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 11 April 2024. • The positive comments in respect of the work of the Education and Skills Overview and Scrutiny Committee within the Estyn report were noted.
