SACRE Members discussed and agreed on revisions to the SACRE TOR as follows: Inclusivity and Religious Representation It was proposed that representation be expanded to include a Baptist leader and a Muslim leader, and a Member offered to make contact with the local mosque and Buddhist Community. The importance of reflecting local demographics was also discussed. Teacher and Union Representation The inclusion of Unison and other teacher unions was discussed. Following concerns raised it was agreed to reword the section to ensure all membership could be used for broader inclusion. Governance and Membership Rules Discussion ensued regarding membership rules, particularly regarding Members missing consecutive meetings. The Group agreed to reword the section to allow for contact and discussion rather than automatic removal aiming for a more flexible and supportive approach. FWP and School Engagement The Cabinet Member emphasized the need for more school visits and sharing good practice, and proposed that SACRE meetings be held in schools, and that faith and belief representatives report their activities.
The SARE Advisor provided updates on the following: · Secondary School Curriculum Pilot Project involving secondary schools from each LA, focussing on developing progressive RVE curricula for Key Stage 3 and 4. Teachers participated in workshops to create example schemes and guidance on good RVE teaching, with plans to share outcomes with SACRE for feedback and promotion. · Primary School Engagement, positive progress had been made in primary schools embracing the new curriculum, with deeper learning and philosophical questions being integrated. However, uptake for professional learning programs was low prompting a call for strategies to increase participation. · Professional Learning Outreach - Efforts to promote professional learning was discussed, including presenting joint head teacher meetings and offering flexible, bespoke training options. The SACRE Advisor committed to arranging further outreach and sharing school development impacts with SACRE. · Challenges in Teacher Engagement – It was reported that there was difficulty in getting teachers out of the classroom for training, citing competing priorities like literacy and numeracy. Members discussed ways to make training more accessible and relevant to school development plans.
The SACRE Advisor updated Members on the following: · NEA Submission and Teacher Workload – The SACRE Advisor explained that NEA coursework for the new GSCE had been submitted, with teachers finding the process particularly challenging due to the volume of work and changing sources. Members acknowledged the administrative burden and discussed potential improvements as teachers become more familiar with the requirements. · Student Cohort Participation – Concern was expressed about schools not entering whole Cohorts for the GCSE, questioning the provision for students not taking the exam and the adequacy of alternative programs like equality and diversity. Members recognised the need for further work to ensure all students receive appropriate education.
Members clarified the process for nominating representatives to the WASACRE Executive Committee, confirming that nominations are submitted to the SACRE Advisor, and voting would be undertaken in May or June.
· Interfaith Council for Wales Competition for Primary Schools In Gwent – information had been circulated and promoted to head teachers with encouragement for schools to participate using existing work. · Strategies for Enhancing School Engagement and Representation – approaches were discussed to increase school engagement, including collaborative outreach to faith communities, school visits, and sharing resources with actions proposed to recruit new representatives and support RVE in schools.
