(Members declarations of interest in relation to this item are set out in Minute 9 above) The Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change submitted a report COH/20/25 which updated Members on the current position with Housing Repairs, including the active and ongoing repairs numbers. During the debate a number of issues were highlighted, including: · The repairs backlog had reduced significantly in the last 12 months. · Acknowledgment that a proportion of the backlog were pre-covid/historic repairs. · Work was taking place behind the scenes to ensure that these improvements continued. Changes such as resource allocation, staff recruitment, enhanced co-ordination with the repairs team and use of digital technology to maximise team output would all have a positive impact. · Positive feedback had been received from the Contract Holders in terms of how the repairs had been carried out by trade operatives. · New apprenticeships were taken on every two years. It was noted that trades were not replaced on a like for like basis and that recruitment was demand led. · Repeat visits were still an issue despite three reminders being issued 24 hours prior to a property visit. This is under review in line with the Renting Homes Act. · 3498 outcards had been issued in the last 12 months. · Recruitment of tradesmen with the Council had increased recently due to favourable terms and conditions when compared to the private sector. · The increase in staff numbers will deliver improved results over the coming months. · Bad weather can have a significant impact on repair numbers. The storm of November 2024 increased repair numbers by 800. · Work is being undertaken to deal with more technical repairs queries online. · There is a focus on reducing repairs that fall outside the allocated timescale. AGREED: i) That the Lead Member and Officers be thanked for their report and congratulated on the progress that had been made in reducing the backlog of reports. ii) To support on-going work on missed appointments and to receive an update on any progress made in this regard. iii) That a further report on performance in respect of Housing Repairs be considered in July 2026.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
