Response by the Cabinet Member: Q1 - Powys County Council has a duty of care to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and visitors to the Council’s cemeteries. All memorials between 1.5 metres and 625mm will be inspected, the rationale being that those under 625mm are unlikely to present a serious risk or danger to employees and visitors. Inspections will be carried out in the following cemeteries: Buttington Newtown Montgomery Maesgwastad Castell Caereinon Llanfyllin Guilsfield Machynlleth Old Knighton New Knighton Rhayader Llandrindod Llanwrtyd Presteigne Llanfilo Hay on Wye Brecon There is an allocation of £40k in 2024/25 and £40k in 2025/26 to carry out this work. Q2- A recent comparison of cemetery fees across Wales has revealed that the fees in Powys are the third highest. We aim to achieve full cost recovery for the cemetery service the fees are not used to subsidise other services in the council. Details of the full accounts for the cemetery service are provided in the attached document.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
