Response by the Cabinet Member: 1. To reiterate what I said publicly in Full Council on the 8th of December, Powys Council follows the Food and nutrition guidance for childcare providers | GOV.WALES best practice guidance for healthy eating and balanced diets, provided to all 22 Local Authorities across Wales. This is applied to all our schools which share common cyclical menus for either primary or secondary provision. As the responsible Portfolio Holder, I do not recognise the term “meat free days” that you continue to insist on using. What the previous Administration sought to offer, and I have continued without change, is to provide healthy nutritionally balanced meals influenced by student feedback on likes and dislikes. 2. For any parent, or Councillor with an interest, our full programme of menus is available on our website School meals - Powys County Council where it can be seen, for instance that fish is provided on Fridays, as an alternative source of protein, just as it was when I was at school. 3. To repeat I have neither changed the menu, nor removed meat from it. The menu continues to be nutritiously balanced, varied over time, and designed to respond to student choice, ensuring that our learners have the opportunity to receive a healthy hot meal every day, whether paid for or free. 4. To repeat, the motion approved at Full Council, in spite of a number voting against, it committed Powys catering services to continue serving healthy nutritional meals which balance the amount of carbohydrates, good quality meat and non-meat protein products, fruit, vegetables, drinks, and dairy products, produced and provided through local supply chains where possible. This will be reflected in the menus catering services design to respond to the meals our learners enjoy, costs, and their aim to provide a variety within the Welsh Government guidance.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
