Councillor Routley asked: The footway running between the crematorium on Magor Road and Pencarn Lane is the only active travel link connecting our local residents to the A48. Over several years, severe overgrowth and a build-up of encroaching earth have narrowed this path significantly, to the point where it is no longer usable for much of its length. Consequently, parents with prams, wheelchair users, and young children are routinely forced off the pavement and onto a very fast, dangerous stretch of road where traffic travels at 50 mph. We are not asking the council for an expensive, full-scale replacement of this footway. We simply require the pavement to be cleared back to its original, full width so that pedestrians can walk safely without risking oncoming traffic. Will the Cabinet Member agree to intervene as a matter of urgency, arrange a site assessment, and commit to a clear timetable for Highways to clear this path and restore its full width for our residents? Councillor Howells responded: I can confirm that the issues you have highlighted, including weeds and overgrown vegetation, have been identified as these are currently reducing the width of the footway. Whilst the Council does not routinely undertake siding works at this location, consideration will be given to carrying out these works as part of a future maintenance programme to help reinstate the full width of the footway. The route is included as part of the Active Travel Network Map, and as such could benefit from future Active Travel investment. This area will remain a potential opportunity for future funding bids, to be considered against other priorities across the City.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
