Councillor Fouweather asked: Last year, in February 2025, the University of South Wales (USW) announced job losses of approximately 90 roles, primarily targeting academic staff and faculty management structures. The university also confirmed it would close a "small number" of courses. This year, on Wednesday 4th March, the (USW) announced another 200 job losses were planned across its estate. After this recent announcement, has the leader of the Council made any contact with the university to ascertain if any jobs or courses will be affected at the Newport City Centre Campus on the riverfront? If yes, what was the result of the conversation? There were once over 10,000 university students studying in Newport in 2010/11. In the space of fifteen years that number has now dropped to around 3,000. Councillor Batrouni responded: I am in regular dialogue with representatives of the University of South Wales (USW). The university has recently appointed a new Vice-Chancellor, who is scheduled to take office in May 2026. I hope to meet Professor Khan to discuss the future plans for USW shortly after. It is worth pointing out that the whole university sector is suffering, a fact which has been widely publicised. I know the Newport Conservatives are stuck in the past, but it is troubling the Newport Conservatives have not recognised the world has completely changed, with world changing events taking place in that time e.g. the Covid pandemic. Comparing student numbers from 2010/11 to 2025/26 does not make any sense. This would be the same as judging a model in place now in 2041, which clearly would be nonsense.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
