There is no summary of this meeting yet. One is written once the council publishes the minutes. The agenda and papers are below.
Councillor Reeks asked: Regarding my question submitted and responded to in August reference 2025/19 - Supplementary : Mon & Brecon Canal, whilst the Senedd discussions are ongoing will the leader undertake to meet with either (or both) Caerphilly Borough Council or Dwr Cymru to discuss the issue of the water feed into the canal that was stopped in 2022 in the Caerphilly borough? The continued lack of this feed has been cited as a cause of the low levels of water into the canal and it would be beneficial to find a workable solution where possible to restore the water, the wildlife and furthermore the tourism to the local area. Councillor Forsey responded: The Manor Road inlet was closed due to contamination concerns affecting the canal's surface water drainage network. Although efforts have been made to resolve the underlying issues, the inlet remains closed as the risk has not yet been fully removed. Currently, there are ongoing discussions at officer level, and our teams are actively exchanging information and working collaboratively to address the issue. Given the complexity of the matter and the ongoing communication, this is best handled at officer level. Newport City Council’s section of the canal has encountered ongoing difficulties with water retention, worsened this year by the driest spring on record, which has affected much of the country. Nevertheless, some stretches north of the 14 locks pond—currently undergoing relining—have managed to retain water for the first time in years. The Council has embarked on a programme of canal works to enhance water flow and retention and is planning further feasibility studies to identify additional water sources to maintain healthy canal levels.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
