Councillor Fouweather asked: Newport’s second ‘innovation station’ opened at the Old Railway Station in October 2023. This was part of a £1.75m project - which included £1.3m from the Welsh Government and £420,639 from Newport Council. A further £140,000 was then needed to transform the new ‘Information Station’ (now relocated to the library on John Frost Square). However, can the Cabinet Member outline the cost of opening the ‘Innovation Station’ at the old railway station? Councillor Batrouni responded: An open market exercise advertised in the local media and aimed at Digitech, and co-working space operators was conducted with the aim of attracting alternative commercial use for the ground and first floor of the Information Station as a tech hub. This open market process allowed access to all potential private sector occupiers to ensure that the Council achieved best commercial value from the letting. Following this open market exercise and evaluation process led by the Council’s property advisors, it was recommended that Tramshed Tech Limited were the preferred tenant, and a financial landlord contribution of £450k was agreed with Tramshed Tech. The ‘Innovation Station’ was a name used by Tramshed Tech when they took over occupation of the building. Costs for opening the ‘Innovation Station’ were the responsibility of Tramshed Tech.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
