Councillor Mogford asked: Earlier this year, cabinet members confirmed they would spend £15,000 on exploring the reopening of public toilets, as part of “bread and butter” budget proposals that focused on residents’ key issues. IT was reported in the media that “A Newport City Council spokesperson said the funding set aside in this year’s budget, for the proposal to reopen public toilets, was “sufficient.” “Plans are progressing, and further details will be made available when those are finalised,” the spokesperson said, before noting there are public toilets available in “several city centre locations including Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre, as well as some other businesses, and in venues across the city.” Can the Cabinet member now give a meaningful update on overall progress and plans relating to this budget item? Councillor Forsey responded: While Councils are not legally required to provide public toilets, Newport City Council does offer facilities in some council areas beyond the City Centre, where several public toilets are already available, including at Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre. A trial is currently underway at Beechwood Park to assess the need to facilitate access to public toilets.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
