There is no summary of this meeting yet. One is written once the council publishes the minutes. The agenda and papers are below.
Councillor Reeks asked: Can the Leader please confirm when the Task and Finish Group will be established, who will be the members of the group, and what the brief of the group will be? Also, can the minutes of stakeholder group meetings be circulated for transparency into the ongoing situation, and finally whilst the Rogerstone arm of the canal has run dry, the Caerphilly arm of the canal the opposite side of Pontymason Lane is holding water. Can the Leader confirm that the recent works to reline the canal to the 14 Locks has been successful and it is not a failure of the lining that is responsible for the lack of water? Councillor Batrouni and Forsey responded: Work among different stakeholders is being coordinated by Welsh Government. This is the written statement: Written Statement: Statement following a meeting with stakeholders on the future of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal (17 July 2025) | GOV.WALES published by the Deputy First Minister following the meeting, we await further communication from WG officers on the matter as no additional detail is available yet. I can confirm that relining works have been successful, and lack of water is linked to weather conditions and limited amounts of water coming down from upper sections, and not to losses within Newport boundaries
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
Declarations are read from the minutes once they are published.
