RESOLVED that Ffynnon Helyg, Pwll, Llanelli be declared as a Local Nature Reserve.
The Cabinet Member considered a report seeking approval to declare Ffynnon Helyg, Pwll, Llanelli as a Local Nature Reserve, under the National Parks and Access to Countryside Act 1949. Officers advised that the site, formerly used as a fishing venue within the Millennium Coastal Park, had undergone a natural transition over a number of years and had developed into a saline lagoon habitat with valuable wildlife. The report noted that the proposed site would cover c10.0ha under the ownership of Carmarthenshire County Council. A survey commissioned in 2025 concluded that the site was of significant importance being the only natural occurring example of its kind in the country. Clarification was provided that designation as a Local nature Reserve would not create unnecessary barriers to future improvement works. Rather, the designation would demonstrate the Council’s commitment to biodiversity and environmental responsibilities. The report noted that following the Declaration of the reserve, a public notice would be published, to inform persons concerned and the wider public of the designation. RESOLVED that Ffynnon Helyg, Pwll, Llanelli be declared as a Local Nature Reserve.
